I have completed two quilts, one rather quickly and one rather slowly. I'll start with the quick one. My kids' school has an annual Arts and Crafts Auction and I decided I would jump on the opportunity to try another quilt. One day over the past year I combined a small collection of fabric scraps into a bag to use as the start of a future quilt. Bright reddish orange, turquoise, yellow, and brown... those colors sat together for a while until, a ha! I'll design something based on those colors for a quilt for the auction. I am finding myself attracted more and more to the simplicity of solids. Anyways, I went for a wonky version of a stacked coins quilt, combining solids and a few prints. I used up my stash of the aqua and orange bird print (I can't remember what it's called). I also decided to use some white and natural linens in the mix. The overall size was about a twin. The quilt fetched something like $975! That was amazing to me. I also got an inquiry from the auctioneer to make some more quilts for her new, old farmhouse. Yikes! I'll see if I am brave enough to do a custom order.<br />

Here's the back side, solid strips of white and natural linens mixed with just a touch of the bright turquoise and orange cotton. I love the simplicity of the back.<br />

Birthdays, knitting projects, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, etc. etc. Here are two more birthday bags made over the past two weeks. For me, that meant sewing up a storm, making items for the boys' school's annual Hearts and Crafts fair. I made up five sets of heart flags, as I have posted about previously, and three sweet heart bags (based on the tutorial on the In Color Order website http://incolororder.blogspot.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html). After seeing how excited my kids were about these bags (they love the way the bags open and close), I had to whip up three more special heart bags as a surprise for today.<div><br /><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bjIksC4v8Qc/Tzq1LVtVMXI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/paMgY65jSlE/s400/_MG_8511.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709074684055990642" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "></span><div><div><br /></div><div>My boys have also been busy making their valentines for school. Yikes! I thought I should probably post about some of the things that I have created over the past almost year. I have actually been creating all along, at times more consistently than others. Back in the fall, I made this little <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">teepee</span> set up for the boys' annual auction. The pattern came from the book, Growing Up Sew Liberated by Meg <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">McElwee</span>. I used a painters' canvas drop cloth for the main fabric, and some soft, sweet, and simple flannel for the edging. I decided to keep it natural and simple, with the idea that the winning bidder could decorate and adorn (paint, etc.) if desired. After I finished, I decided to make a quick fluffy flannel mat to go with it. My kids begged me to make another one for them and I almost did as a Christmas surprise, but realized there wouldn't be enough time. But, it's a fun project and I hope to make another one soon. The only thing I changed was I omitted the window in the back. Otherwise, the pattern is great, and the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">teepee</span> comes out looking very finished, with all seams hidden. </div><div><br /></div><div>There's a work in progress on my design wall behind the teepee- a quilt for my younger son. He's been so patiently waiting, as I keep having to take breaks to work on other projects. Hopefully, I will get back to posting a little more often...</div>rainyqueenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10443894029182750208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6472900224634362873.post-78200954351777591692011-05-13T10:09:00.000-07:002011-05-16T10:14:13.449-07:00I Heart Colorful Flags<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dq_QKMevnSM/Tc1l81E_HrI/AAAAAAAAAG4/Y6x62BxsD5E/s1600/IMG_7775.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dq_QKMevnSM/Tc1l81E_HrI/AAAAAAAAAG4/Y6x62BxsD5E/s400/IMG_7775.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606249206860684978" /></a><br /><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-41YktIecLs4/Tc1l9B7er9I/AAAAAAAAAHA/v5qJeDh-oVI/s400/IMG_7780.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5606249210310471634" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 84px; " /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>The <a href="http://fromroseavenue.blogspot.com/2011/02/hearts.html">heart flags</a> that I made for my boys' school annual Hearts and Crafts fair were a hit. It's called Sixth Time's A Charm. This was my first attempt at following a quilt pattern, and while I loved the output of the design, the actual directions need some revisions. Some of the measurements weren't correct, and the pattern creates a lot of waste. So far, I have been able to use some of the extras to make a spur of the moment birthday doll quilt for a friend and I am sure other opportunities will arise as well. </div><div><br /></div><div>I'll have to get some more pictures of this quilt and it's doll quilt companion sometime soon. But, overall this pattern was fun, and I even got to work making another one as soon as this one was done. I was planning on making another one for a baby shower, but ran out of time. The strips are all cut and waiting under piles of other projects. Oops, too many ideas have been swirling through my head.</div><div><br /></div><div>I definitely want to try this one again, in a revised method I have going in my head. It's interesting to see how it all comes together in the end though. And, I really enjoyed my first try at hand quilting. Note to self though: machine quilt first, hand sew second next time (the other way around creating a lot of bunching).</div>rainyqueenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10443894029182750208noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6472900224634362873.post-62200699205079142752011-02-07T11:10:00.000-08:002011-02-07T11:22:19.333-08:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE8P5nAkI/AAAAAAAAADQ/XDKQm496pG4/s1600/IMG_7370.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE8P5nAkI/AAAAAAAAADQ/XDKQm496pG4/s400/IMG_7370.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571028540908307010" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE7Z4tGqI/AAAAAAAAADI/AZqjEgNwC1k/s1600/IMG_7360.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE7Z4tGqI/AAAAAAAAADI/AZqjEgNwC1k/s400/IMG_7360.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571028526408997538" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE6rfgZ3I/AAAAAAAAADA/M55cbIIBbiw/s1600/IMG_7363.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBE6rfgZ3I/AAAAAAAAADA/M55cbIIBbiw/s400/IMG_7363.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571028513955276658" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBEMT1s2rI/AAAAAAAAAC4/KjMq94yvAAI/s1600/_MG_6795.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBEMT1s2rI/AAAAAAAAAC4/KjMq94yvAAI/s400/_MG_6795.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571027717331933874" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBELohXFFI/AAAAAAAAACw/aiLEHOjdA0M/s1600/IMG_6803.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBELohXFFI/AAAAAAAAACw/aiLEHOjdA0M/s400/IMG_6803.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571027705703896146" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBELCPWLOI/AAAAAAAAACo/KlrZBRTGEsQ/s1600/IMG_6798.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TVBELCPWLOI/AAAAAAAAACo/KlrZBRTGEsQ/s400/IMG_6798.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571027695427792098" /></a><br /><div>After my baby was born, I was able to finish two more quilts for some friends' babies. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>rainyqueenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10443894029182750208noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6472900224634362873.post-83877456198766332082011-02-06T22:57:00.000-08:002011-02-07T00:57:15.321-08:00The Beginning<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TU-mGrQIwlI/AAAAAAAAACY/hXkLe9fk6hQ/s400/IMG_6748.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570853897700426322" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">During my last pregnancy, I decided to dive into a new craft. You know one of those bright third trimester ideas you get. Something to do with all of my "spare time". I already had two young, active boys, and also did a fair amount of gardening on our property. But, I got it into my head that I was going to start sewing modern looking baby quilts. I hadn't really ever been a consistent sewer. I made some things with my mom when I was young, sewed some ski pants in college, and maybe some other random things here and there. But, I decided it looked pretty easy and it was probably something that I could do during the infamous "nap time" every day. Plus, I happen to know a lot of friends having babies. I plucked some interesting fabrics from my mom's stash, bought a few fat quarters from our local shop and tried making a quilt. I made three simple quilts before my baby girl was born in April. I was humbled. I have a lot to learn about quiltmaking!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TU-llvmIr1I/AAAAAAAAACQ/8MWtKxne2EI/s400/IMG_6759.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570853331930754898" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TU-kjjj4N3I/AAAAAAAAACA/q4_mZ3OsuOk/s400/IMG_6732.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570852194828695410" /><img style="text-align: center;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TU-lEOKqx7I/AAAAAAAAACI/CgwP2gOsz-M/s400/IMG_0095.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570852756021495730" /><img style="text-align: center;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px; " src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dVxASnM-0Nk/TU-meF-3xlI/AAAAAAAAACg/AHwekq281_8/s400/IMG_0096.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570854300012758610" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">I also have a lot to learn about setting up a blog...</div></div></div>rainyqueenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10443894029182750208noreply@blogger.com2
